Update: New Rochelle Boy Died of Skull Fracture

While no criminal charges have been filed yet, New Rochelle police Tuesday continue to investigate the “suspicious” death over the weekend of a 2-year-old boy with a skull fracture.

“We had a child with an injury, a fractured skull, and we are trying to determine at this point how that happened,” said Police Capt. Joseph Schaller.

The boy, who died early Sunday morning in his Main Street apartment, spent 15 months in foster care before being returned to his parents last June, Schaller said.

The boy had been removed from his parents’ care after being treated for a broken leg as a baby, Schaller said.  No criminal charges  stemming from that injury were ever filed, he said.

Police received a call from a neighbor on Main Street at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday saying that the boy was having trouble breathing. The child was taken to Sound Shore Medical Center where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

The Journal News reports the boy’s 5-month-old brother was taken to the hospital with respiratory problems shortly before the 2-year-old died.

New Rochelle police have labeled Sunday’s death of Khalil Leak “suspicious” but reportedly said they don’t believe the brothers’ medical issues were related in any way.
