Update: Librarian is Bank Robber in New Rochelle

Update:  Police say the 56 year old woman who robbed a Chase Bank in downtown New Rochelle Thursday is the acting Children’s Librarian at the New Rochelle Public Library Branch downtown.
“Mary Thomas an employee of our library,” Thomas Geoffino, director of the New Rochelle Public Library, said in a statement. “She is much beloved by her colleagues and library patrons. We have no further comment at this time.”

At  9:48 a.m., New Rochelle Police Department Officers responded to 270 North Avenue, a Chase Bank, on a report of a Bank Robbery in progress.

Police say Thompson, who lives in New Rochelle, handed a teller a note, which read “give me $100,000. I have a gun.”

The teller turned over approximately $7,000, and the suspect left the bank.

She was apprehended outside of the bank minutes later.

Mary Thompson was charged with Robbery, First Degree.

This is very sad. Clearly something isn’t right in her home life or she wouldn’t have done this. Now, her life is pretty much over at least from a career perspective. We have a mental illness problem so severely neglected in this country and the disparity of income and wealth has only further exasperated it. It brings out the worst in people and society as a whole is to blame for that. I do food delivery in the area and I see a lot more now than ever before. It makes me sad when a poor family gives me a $20.00 tip and the next customer, living in a $2mm home gives me $2.00 or nothing. You don’t like your food? Then cook it yourself or get off your butt and pick it up on your own you cheapskates. The one thing I’ve learned quickly is that the rich get richer because they prey off and take advantage of the under dogs. They prey off the impoverished and they foster the inequities that lead to mental illness where good people end up doing really bad things. Our class structured Society has blood on their hands here too.
