To the Editor: How Can School District Reschedule Pre-K at Last Minute?

pre-K letterTo the Editor:

I wish to express that I am angry and stunned by a letter I received in the mail Wednesday announcing a last-minute change by the Mamaroneck School District.

I am a working parent that enrolled my child in the Universal Pre-Kindergarten program that will begin at Central School in Larchmont next week. The letter states that school will be running each day from 9:15 am- 11:45 am, rather than the 8:45 am- 11:15 am schedule were were given last Spring, due to transportation issues.

This time change, when I must be at work by 9:00 am, means either my child cannot enroll, or I cannot work.

What voice was representing and advocating on part of 51 families when the District decided this… Cowardice!  This is certainly not in touch with the community they are serving ( as part of application process we had to identify if we worked and what our jobs are… they have the data.)

What about siblings in K-5?  Are parents supposed to sit in their car with the Pre-K child for 30 additional minutes waiting?

Above is a copy of the undated letter from the Guidance Center of Westchester, which administers the program for the District (and had no part in this decision.)

Thank you,

Name Witheld

I’m a parent who received the same letter but I only received it last Friday. My letter said it started Sept 1 (not sure who marked up your letter but mine was not). I even spoke with Ms Hindley on Friday and she said it was Sept 1. No one was in the preK office when I called. I emailed the director to clarify and she told me it was Sept 2.

I have an older child at Central and agree this timing is awful. The part about withdrawing your child is so insensitive as most programs open enrollment in November of the previous year and there are hardly any that would accept students at this time (unless someone has moved last minute).

I’d like to understand what the issues are because as a resident of the district there are no buses and now for older children you cannot pick them up by car. There should have been a meeting on this.

The communication has been terrible. I’m very disappointed. I’m going to write to Dr Shaps.

Thank you for posting. It’s good to know I’m not the only one.

I am not surprised . In my opinion the Board and the Superintendent are out of touch with the community they serve and this is a perfect example of it They all probably come and go as they please and the assume everyone else does . They need an reality check
