The Way We Were: The Curtain Shop

We started to add The Curtain Shop in New Rochelle as simply one of our Cool Finds, but the history of the building (541 Main Street, New Rochelle) was too compelling.

Today, of course, it’s CurtainShop.com, a friendly, completely customer service-oriented shop with the feel of an old general store and the inventory of a Bed Bath and Beyond.

The Curtain Shop has been around for 37 years, in The Arcade Building that dates to 1897.

Here’s the building before a nationally acclaimed 2007 facelift that revealed two banks of arched windows and terracotta relief work that had been hidden since the 1960’s.

About 1945:

And the way it was in 1897.

A more complete history here.

Thanks Polly! I like your take on our building and the history. Many buildings have had a facelift in our downtown and many more are on the way. The BID was a huge help and without them, this would never have happened.
Keep up the great work.
