‘Tequila’ to Reopen Week of September 8

Owner Melissa Perez oversees exterior repairs at Tequila Sunrise

Until last Friday, popular Mexican eatery Tequila Sunrise of Westchester closed unexpectedly only once since it opened 23 years ago. That was when the building lost electricity during Superstorm Sandy.

That changed on August 28, only moments after the sidewalk lunch crowd was hurried indoors, and the overhang on Tequila’s terra cotta roof came crashing down to the Larchmont Avenue sidewalk below. No one was injured thanks to two fast acting women walking by, and a waiter.

Now Melissa Perez, who with her husband Richie owns the restaurant, is juggling construction crews, insurance adjusters, her worried customers, and three boys starting school again.

Perez says that inspectors have told her the building is structurally sound.

“The loss of business, the loss of goods, all that can be replaced,” she says. “We are so grateful no one was hurt, and the emergency responders and our neighbors were so great that whole day.”

It is believed that a crack in the facade of the roof caused the whole front edge to detach and fall.

“It was up there 35 years,” Melissa tells theLoop, “We can only make that assumption because unless you could peel back the roof layer by layer, we may never know for sure.”

After the accident, Melissa called her friend Doug Mooney, who owns Cornerstone Construction Co., and, she says, they have been working to restore the facade ever since. The old one will be replaced with a panel that will sit flush with the building.

She expects the restaurant to be back in business next week.
