Tell me a Story: New Larchmont Library Children’s Room

The long awaited renovation of the children’s room at the Larchmont Library is officially complete.

The new Burchell Children’s Room  debuted Thursday night, when local leaders and supporters who helped make the $3.5 million rehab possible, flocked to the new kids’ digs, taking in the fresh surroundings as well as roving finger foods and drinks – neither of which will be part of the library’s upcoming offerings.

Instead, the Burchell Children’s Room – named for George and Margaret Burchell in recognition of a generous bequest – is being touted as a place where kids can read, discover and explore, complete with books for kids from toddler to teen; a puppet theater stage; an activity room; parenting and special needs collections; and an activity room.

The construction of the room, which is 1,170 square feet bigger than the old one, also included new means of going green throughout the library building, from an environmentally-friendly HVAC system throughout , to energy efficient lighting and windows and new insulation.

Funding for the project came from private donations.; grants and bonding by the Village of Larchmont and Town of Mamaroneck.

I can’t wait to see this space. My kids grew up in the old children’s library, and we had no complaints, but I can imagine that have a larger, cleaner, more comfortable space will be wonderfully appealing to the parents, kids, and caregivers.
