Still No Sign of “Armed Man” at Mamaroneck Dist. School

MAMARONECK— Though the “armed man” may prove to be nothing more than a swimmer that came to retrieve his trunks at the Hommocks Pool last week, police will continue to patrol Mamaroneck schools as school officials meet Tuesday night to discuss security measures.

“The board will consider an emergency resolution to install entrance equipment and monitoring systems at the middle school and elementary schools,” district spokeswoman Debbie Manetta told The Journal News on Monday.

Town of Mamaroneck Police spokesman Lt. Robert Koziak says an investigation into the incident continues, and the man’s ID remains unknown.

Police described the man as 50 to 55 years old with an Irish accent and wearing a black North Face jacket and white V-neck shirt.

In a letter to parents School Superintendent Dr. Robert Shaps wrote, “In reviewing (Thursday’s) events, we realize there was confusion about what had actually happened and why this individual would come onto campus with a weapon.  The good news, however, is that in a moment of uncertainty people remained calm, followed procedures and resumed with the rest of the day.”

What do you think? Did the administration jump the gun with robo calls and emergency emails in all capital letters? Or did they respond appropriately in the wake of the Newtown incident?
