Stay out of the Hudson

Despite the crushing heat, the County Department of Health and now the Mayor of Mamaroneck are notifying residents to avoid direct contact with the Hudson River in Westchester throughout the weekend, after raw sewage was dumped into the Hudson as the result of a huge Manhattan fire Wednesday.

The blaze, at the North River Wastewater Treatment plant at W. 135th Street just west of the West Side Highway, took the plant out of service and untreated wastewater has been discharging into the Hudson since about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, according to the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

The New York City Department of Health has issued a similar warning.  Health officials say they are most concerned about people who use the Hudson River for recreational purposes, such as swimmers, windsurfers and kayakers.
