Rumorville: What’s Happened to Longford’s?

Growing up in Scarsdale, Wesley White remembers the big draw in Larchmont: The Sweet Shop, a candy store at the corner of Palmer and Larchmont Avenues. He longed to re-create an old fashioned ice cream store with a soda fountain and table service.

So he bought the Larchmont Longford’s store a few weeks ago.

He says it will soon be transformed into The Ice Cream Parlour. “And over the next three years,” says White, “we will move back in time to about 1920.”

“An old fashioned American soda fountain is what we’re shooting for.”

The first phase should complete in about a month–if you’ve been in there, you’ll see there’s definitely something going on– and with his father and sister, White will eventually bring in ice cream from small producers to carry out or order at marble tables and cafe chairs.

“It’s all in the presentation,” says White, who had an ice cream parlor in New Haven. “We want people to take 10 minutes for ice cream brought to you in a tin dish with a fan cookie, and to make it feel special.”

Just came home from this place and am *so* disappointed. It is such a shame to have lost the previous owner. Mediocre flavor, totally unfriendly service for my teen sons and me plus a serving size that was half the Longford’s one! Cases are jumbled and signs unclear. Wesley waited on us and explained (insert grumbling) that the “Buy 9, get the 10th Free” means “have 9 visits and get a free single.” Really? Am I missing something or isn’t friendly service to people with hungry kids and money kind of vital to a business like this? Many other local businesses do a great job on this. Wesley – take a lesson from Groove or LTs or just move to Scarsdale.

I’ve lived here since 1962 and I never remember any store at that intersection called ‘The Sweet Shop”. The only store near there with a name like that was “The Smoke Shop”. The Smoke Shop was where Write On is today. Before Longford’s it was Baskin Robins Ice Cream which has been on that corner since the mid to late 60’s. They went in after a fire destroyed the T.V. and Radio Store that was there since the 50’s.

I hope the new store retains the “nut free” cases. They provide one of the few places my kids can enjoy a peanut-safe treat!
