Rumorville: Ciao, Palombo

Friday was reportedly the last day open for Palombo, the Arthur Avenue-based Italian pastry shop on Chatsworth Avenue in Larchmont.

 

 

 

You may recall when Polombo took over the old Avenue P space in May, 2009. (Avenue P was recently reborn on the Post Road)

No more details available about Palombo; nor its six Bronx locations. Info welcome!

I went in once and to have some gelato, it was tasteless and icy. I never went back. I am neither sad nor surprised to see that it has closed.

If you want good homebaked goods, try OMG Cakes at Taranto’s Deli in Larchmont. They are located at next to Larchmont Nurseries and they have excellent cheesecake, cupcakes and carrot cakes.

No surprise.. this was not a true Italian Bakery.

The lady who ran the place when it first opened was so nice, warm and welcoming, especially with children. And then they must have visited Aroma and figured that was the Larchmont way.

A few months ago, my teenage son was watching Cake Boss which was all about cannolis. We often buy them on Arthur Avenue and those are the only ones he’s ever had. “I’m dying for one of those!” he kept saying as he watched the show. I wasn’t in the mood to drive to the Bronx, but I offered to go to Palumbo and get him one. Well, I could kind of tell by looking at it that it wasn’t going to measure up, but it was worse than it looked. The filling was dry and gummy and the shell was stale. He was not satisfied! There was one day I noticed a crowd there and hoped they’d improved. When going further down the street, I noticed Bradley’s was closed. Case closed.

As an Italian growing up on LI this was one of the worst examples of Italian pastries that I have ever experienced. The food was never fresh…it was always made in the Bronx, frozen and transported up to us. I had such high hopes for the cookies and breakfast pastries of my childhood. I think unfortunately it also took a cheesy spin on what “Italian” is suppose to look like and the decor was really more Jersey Shore than what I would have expected in our quaint town. Though we do have Bradley’s down the street I would be happy with any other bakery that just produces great food be it French or Italian. Service was an issue also especially when you ask for biscotti and get a napoleon. The space is a great location let’s hope for something wonderful soon!

I had such high expectations for a real Italian bakery. Unfortunately, this was worse than a coffee shop I once visited in Ohio. Is it that difficult to make a decent cup of coffee or sell wonderful biscotti/pastries when you’re located only a half hour away from one of the great food capitals of the world? I don’t think so. Apparently others agreed…

I found the baked goods, at least lately, uninteresting and far from fresh.

What we do need in Larchmont is a really good bakery, French, Viennese, etc.

The pastries were very good and fresh when they first opened. Then, over the past 6 months, I noticed the pastries were old and stale. Also, the counter help was never very friendly — seemed like a huge effort for them to get up from a table w/ their friends to help w/ an order.
