The County Health Department today issued rabies alerts for Mamaroneck and Scarsdale residents who may have come in contact with rabid skunks that have since been killed.
The alert for Mamaroneck comes after a rabid skunk chased a man cleaning his truck Sept. 8 on Center Avenue between Ogden Avenue and Fenimore Road, according to the county. The Scarsdale alert stems from a skunk that tested positive for rabies after following a dog around a yard on Brewster Road between Farley Road and Gorham Court Sept. 13th. Construction workers threw rocks at the skunk and killed it.
Individuals who may have been in contact with the animas should call the health department at 813-5000 to determine whether they should get treatment for the disease.
The Health Department also issued rabies alerts for Ossining, Yorktown and Katonah Friday after two rabid skunks and a rabid raccoon were discovered in those communities.
Four pets that had contact with a rabid animal are receiving rabies booster shots. No individuals had direct contact with any of the rabid animals and these animals are no longer a threat, health officials said.
The alerts come slightly more than a week after a rabid raccoon — the third animal since the summer — was confirmed in Larchmont.
