Pelham Poison Ivy Shows Impact of Budget Cuts

Loop reader Michael writes,

At first I was really annoyed that the Village of Pelham has not done anything about this public hazard. However, upon further discussion I am aware that this is an example of how budget cuts hurt local quality of life. The budget cuts are not local government’s fault. The big picture economy needs to change.

Below is part of his discussion with the Mayor of Pelham:

Dear Mr. Cammer-

Thank you for your follow-up inquiry.

The owners of the property at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Young Avenue are being contacted again by the Pelham Police Department to perform additional pruning and overgrowth removal on the sidewalk side of their hedges. The owners have recently complied with required sidewalk repairs as requested by the Village.

The Village’s Highway Department is scheduling a trimming of the overgrowth on Village property before said overgrowth becomes a nuisance. Village-wide pruning usually occurs in late summer, however, 4 seasonal positions were removed from this year’s budget so the schedule had to be moved back to early fall. We are trying to address this particular area as soon as possible.

Again, thank you for sharing your concerns.

Sincerely,
Robert A. Yamuder

August 20 and poison ivy is growing over the sidewalk at a bus stop. We only asked six or seven weeks ago for this to be cut back or killed.

Dear Mr. Cammer-

Thank you for your inquiry.

The proper Village of Pelham authorities were notified of your concerns and the owner of the subject private property was notified to perform maintenance operations to ensure the overgrowth is cut back at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Young Avenue. If said maintenance is not performed, the owner would be subject to a summons.

Village property in the area will be cleared of reported ivy as well.

Thank you for bringing these issues to my attention.

Sincerely,
Robert A. Yamuder
Administrator

Dear Village of Pelham,

There is a situation at Lincoln Avenue and Young Avenue which is constricting the sidewalks and forcing pedestrians to walk in the street. Particularly at this stretch of Lincoln Avenue it is important to not force pedestrians into the street.

The sidewalk and bus stop on the south side of Lincoln Avenue at Young Avenue across from the gas station are overgrown with poison ivy. Large leaves are growing over the sidewalk from the bushes and out into the sidewalk. (see attached pics)

Also, the rock wall across the street to the left of the gas station is a large poison ivy patch. Although it currently does not reach down to the sidewalk, at the rate of growth it likely will by the middle or end of summer if not checked.

Would you please have the poison ivy removed from the public sidewalks.

Thank you.

Regards,

Michael Cammer
