The father of a Hommocks Middle School student who alleged a racial incident at the school back in December has started OneMamaroneck.org, described as “A collective of like-minded individuals who are passionate about bringing change directly to the front door of the Mamaroneck Union Free School District.”
The parent, David Martin and others in the community have criticized the District for its slow response to Martin’s complaint about the incident to school officials.
Martin, a Mamaroneck resident with two children in the district, reported that his daughter and two other black students, who attend Hommocks, were called the n-word by a white classmate at an after-school program in December.
We first reported the charges of racism and the Mamaroneck School District’s alleged slow response Feb. 6.
A week after the School Board meeting, during which Martin recounted the taunt involving his daughter, Schools Superintendent Robert Shaps sent an apologetic letter to the community saying, “To be perfectly clear: the district did not initially react properly to this matter.”
Martin writes about the incident on his blog, davidmartin.education and calls for the “Immediate and unconditional resignation” of Superintendent Robert Shaps, school board President Steve Warner and Vice President Paul Bulova.
He has posted an online petition calling for the resignations.
OneMamaroneck.org has scheduled a Town Hall meeting on Monday, Feb 25 at the Mamaroneck Public Library from 6:00 pm- 7:30 pm.
