New Rochelle’s Mariano Rivera to Baseball Hall of Fame

New Rochelle’sMariano Rivera, who the Daily News calls “the greatest closer of all time”, was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday night. The first-ballot induction was the first ever unanimous vote.

He will be inducted in Cooperstown on July 21.

In 2014, Mariano and Clara Riverarenovated New Rochelle’s Iglesia Refugio de Esperanza, a church where Clara has served as pastor. The Riveras also have beenhosts to aschool supplies driveat the church, where they gave out about 800 backpacks.

City Manager Chuck Strome said in a statement:
“Congratulations to Marino Rivera for his unanimous election to the Hall of Fame. It is a well-deserved honor and tribute to his outstanding career. Not only is he a baseball Hall of Famer, but a ‘Hall of Famer’ in New Rochelle for his generosity and the volunteer service he continually provides to our community.”
