New Rochelle’s Mariano Rivera, who the Daily News calls “the greatest closer of all time”, was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Tuesday night. The first-ballot induction was the first ever unanimous vote.
He will be inducted in Cooperstown on July 21.
In 2014, Mariano and Clara Rivera renovated New Rochelle’s Iglesia Refugio de Esperanza, a church where Clara has served as pastor. The Riveras also have been hosts to a school supplies drive at the church, where they gave out about 800 backpacks.
City Manager Chuck Strome said in a statement:
“Congratulations to Marino Rivera for his unanimous election to the Hall of Fame. It is a well-deserved honor and tribute to his outstanding career. Not only is he a baseball Hall of Famer, but a ‘Hall of Famer’ in New Rochelle for his generosity and the volunteer service he continually provides to our community.”
