Students, Parents and staff at New Rochelle High School students are dealing with another student on student assault in eight days, one deadly.
Thursday, a New Rochelle High School student fled from the campus after stabbing a 16-year-old classmate, just eight days after another student was fatally stabbed at a Dunkin Donuts on North Avenue. Thw 16-year-old student is said to have sustained two puncture wounds to his left torso. It is believed the incident followed a fight in a classroom.
Police said the injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The school was placed on lockout after suspect, a 15-year-old student, was seen on video leaving the building shortly after the incident. Increased security will be present at the school for the forseeable future, say school officials.
At a School Board meeting Thursday some questioned the wisdom of an “open campus” and others accused the school of shirking responsibility because the three incidents occurred off campus. There was anger and concern at a School Board meeting Thursday night. (Video)
Parents were first alerted to the stabbing by text and an automated phone message announcing, “There is currently a lockout in effect at NRHS.” Several dozen parents rushed to the school after receiving the text alert.
Thursday’s incident also comes one day after a 15-year-old student at the school of about 3,300 students was attacked while ordering food at Gemelli Pizzeria on North Avenue. That incident took place around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
New Rochelle police said that in Wednesday’s incident, the 15-year-old was allegedly assaulted by 16- and 17-year-olds at the restaurant which, like the Dunkin Donuts, is on North Avenue near the school campus.
Anyone with information about any of the incidents, including today’s stabbing, is urged to contact the New Rochelle Police Department at 914-654-2300.
