Larchmont– A Larchmont Avenue block between the Boston Post Road and Addison Ave. was closed to traffic Friday as police and fire crews continue an investigation into the thunderous roof collapse at Tequila Sunrise.
A large section of a terra cotta style tile roof at the popular Mexican restaurant at 145 Larchmont Ave. crashed onto the sidewalk below during the noontime lunch hour Friday. No one was injured.
According to an eyewitness, a quick thinking diner and waiter noticed an “ominous large crack threatening overhead.” Oscar Hinojosa, the waiter, reportedly rushed outside diners indoors to safety, as the roof overhang collapsed around them.
According to a post on Facebook Jennifer Lapkovsky-Barnes was walking by Tequila Sunrise with Erin Murphy Ferrarone when they noticed a crack in the facade. Lapkovsky-Barnes went inside to tell the staff and they moved the people eating outside back indoors.
Tequila Sunrise owner Melissa Perez said, “No one was hurt. That’s all I’m thankful for right now, and that’s all I can say at this point.” Larchmont Fire Chief John Caparelli told reporters it was “a miracle” no one was injured in the collapse at the restaurant.
The sidewalk had lighter than usual foot traffic because many residents are out of town as August draws to a close.
Firefighters and rescue teams from other local districts including New Rochelle and Pelham assisted Larchmont Fire and Police. Several television camera crews were on the scene; news helicopters could be heard overhead many hours after the accident.
Bulldozers and other construction vehicles remain on site as inspection of the building continues.
