Mamaroneck’s Otter Creek Now in Westchester Land Trust

The Westchester Land Trust (WLT) is now managing the 35-acre Otter Creek Preserve in Mamaroneck having taken over from The Nature Conservancy.

The Preserve is the “largest privately-owned tidal wetland designated and protected as a nature sanctuary in Westchester County,” according to the WLT. With new plantings and trail signage, it’s worth a visit.

You can hike through a forest on a short trail next to the coastal wetland, which attracts dozens of bird species including Ospreys who have nesting platforms nearby. You’ll probably see groups of deer romping through the woods.

Acquired as part of a transfer from The Nature Conservancy in April 2015, the Preserve is also deemed a “Geologic Area of Particular Concern” by the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation. In the 1970’s, the Village of Mamaroneck declared it a “Critical Environmental Area.”

The Otter Creek Preserve is located on Taylors Lane in Mamaroneck. Turn onto Taylors Lane from Boston Post Road and go 0.5 miles, past the ‘Private Road’ sign. Near the end of Taylors Lane, the preserve is visible on the right side of the road. Parking is on the right along the split rail fence.
