The trial of Reginald Powell 56, accused of the grisly stabbing of Mamaroneck mom Jennifer Katz, 49, in her Mamaroneck Village home on Baldwin Place, will resume today.

Powell is charged with first- and second-degree murder in the Dec. 28, 2010 killing.

In testimony Friday, Powell’s lawyer claimed Katz was already dead, her lifeless body stuffed in a closet, when he came upon her in her home two years ago.

Prosecutors said Friday Powell had sex with the Mamaroneck mother of two not long before he stabbed her and hid her lifeless body in a bedroom closet.

Powell served more than 20 years in prison for the 1984 killing of a New Rochelle cabdriver on I-95. He was paroled in 2009, according to state records, in part because his brother, a Bishop at the Strait Gate Church in Mamaroneck, testified on his behalf.

Powell was found with some of Katz’s jewelry when New York City police pulled him over for making an illegal left turn Dec. 30, 2010, in Katz’s Toyota Highlander in Harlem. Police also found two bags of heroin and 40 oxycodone pills in the SUV.

Prosecutors have not fully detailed Powell’s motive for the alleged murder, though the Journal News reports lawyers for Powell have suggested that it might have been part of a conspiracy with Powell’s brother, Warren Powell, Katz’s former boyfriend, who was the apparent beneficiary of a $500,000 life insurance claim.

Powell faces life in prison if found guilty.
