Mamaroneck Library Update

This construction update on the new Mamaroneck library estimates work will be finished by the end of the year…

 with an opening date TBA.

from Mamaroneck Library Trustees:

Anticipation is growing as construction continues on the new home for the Mamaroneck Library.  Much progress has been made at the busy construction site. The old building was gutted; asbestos removed, and is being renovated with new wiring, plumbing, heating/cooling and a new layout to tie in with the addition.

While the snows did delay us this winter, the new addition is now really taking shape. You can see the tall columns which will herald the new entranceway to the library (the old entrance will be a glassed in sunroom off of our restored historic reading room.) and the new addition is on its way to being closed in. On the top full floor, we were excited to learn our children’s library will have a small, but pretty view of the harbor.

Our Building Committee and Library staff selected carpeting, internal signage and lighting, and now are busy in the coming months selecting shelving and furniture, and much more.

The new Library will deliver an expansion of services, new programs, user-friendly technology and much needed space when it reopens. Construction is scheduled to be completed at the end of this year.

The Library’s needs were clear before construction began. The library had to expand its usable space; upgrade and improve its technology to meet the ever-growing demand; create specially designed spaces for different groups and their uses; and meet current code requirements for public buildings.  An impressive “wish list” of key requirements was generated from the focus groups and surveys the Library commissioned.  These were then used as the Library worked with the architectural firm of BKSK Architects.

When you walk through the doors of the new Library, you will experience a modern, user-friendly Silver LEED-rated “Green” building.  In response to community requests, comfortable chairs and reading areas will be stationed throughout the facility. There will be a completely redesigned and expanded Children’s Library and a separate Teens’ section along with areas for children to receive help with homework and school projects. To meet growing demands of the community, there will be an expanded all-purpose room with audio-visual technology. The design for the new building allows for flexibility so that the Library can adapt to the changing needs of the community. Plans for a small café and different sized meeting areas will enable the new Library to function as a true community center.

In addition, the New Library will feature a Technology Center with the latest media to enhance our users’ experience. The entir
e building will have free WiFi service which will allow patrons easy access to the internet. From user-friendly automated check-out counters to expanded computer terminals, the library seeks to be a model for the future while retaining its friendly community atmosphere. The Library plans to hold free computer training classes so that its patrons can take advantage of new technology and be better prepared in today’s high tech world.

The Mamaroneck Library is an essential part of our community, particularly during these difficult economic times. The Library provides services to help those seeking jobs and the community at large who wish to expand their knowledge, increase their opportunities and enrich their lives. Along with popular Children’s and Teen programs, downloadable books and e-books, research guidance and more, the Library continues to be an even more important resource to the community.

It’s been an exciting year for the Mamaroneck Library. Even in tough economic times, members of the community continue to recognize the value in making a contribution to what will be the centerpiece of our community. The Library is hoping it can meet its fund raising goal as construction continues, and welcomes any and all personal or corporate tax-deductible contributions.

Please remember to visit the Library at its temporary headquarters at 102 Mamaroneck Avenue where you will find the friendly, professional staff you have come to know and depend upon.
