Mamaroneck Hockey Rolls Over John Jay 4-0

Mamaroneck v John Jay 3

It was another Mamaroneck Tigers victory, as the Tigers rolled over John Jay High School  4-0, their second consecutive shutout win.

Mamaroneck cruised into this game after handily defeating Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville a week prior 5-0, and looked to continue their dominance on January 23 against John Jay. And they did just that, and looked very convincing 30 seconds into the game when Mamaroneck stuck first and scored on their first shot on goal, immediately deflating what confidence John Jay had.

John Jay looked very clumsy during the game, giving Mamaroneck a lot of opportunities to score.  John Jay’s only shining light in the game was their goalie, despite giving up four goals with zero defense, was like a brick wall tending the goal, stopping many of Mamaroneck’s aerial shots on goal as well as line drives on the ice.

Mamaroneck seemingly got robbed late in the first period, as the puck trickled slowly past the goal line, but the referees were unaware as the John Jay goalie swiped it out of there quickly. Mamaroneck players brought it to the referee’s attention, but to no avail.

Going into the second period up 1-0, Mamaroneck seemed unnerved by John Jay’s phenomenal goalie; to the point Mamaroneck Coach Michael Chiapparelli called for a time out and loudly let his team know that their missed opportunities at goals were unacceptable. He also came off like he was trying to light a fire under his team, which it did.

Junior Will Arbo was amped up after that animated pep talk and was using his power and speed to intimidate John Jay, which worked, as he tallied a goal to put his team up 2-0. Mamaroneck continued to overpower John Jay and saw Junior Chris Conley score the team’s third goal at the buzzer, giving Mamaroneck a decisive edge heading into the third period.

The third period was academic, as Mamaroneck just looked to play good defense and kill off the clock en route to their third straight win. Junior Jason Bienstock finished it off with Mamaroneck’s fourth goal of the game, which saw another great game from goalie Tom Spero, who was lifted late in the third to give him a breather. Mamaroneck never let up their intensity, hitting hard when they could, which eventually led to the fans in the stands watching the game from the rink’s perimeter.

All in all, Mamaroneck finished with a fierce 57 shots on goal, which goes to show you just how bad the John Jay defense was but how good their goalie was, while John Jay had a poor shooting night, only landing 11 shots on goal.

Mamaroneck improves to 12-4-2 on the season, three straight wins. Their next game is Friday night January 20, when they play host to rival New Rochelle at home which will be Mamaroneck’s Senior Night. Make it a point to get to one of these games, as it’s a fun time and the home crowd is lively.
