Mamaroneck Hockey Heartbreaker

Mamaroneck tigers

Riding a four game winning streak, the Mamaroneck Tigers suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Suffern Mounties 4-3, losing their first home game of the season.
Mamaroneck has been riding a huge wave of momentum the last few weeks, looking to put their last loss, to rival Pelham, behind them, and focusing on the upcoming post season. Mamaroneck has been nothing short of dominant and were looking to capitalize on it against Suffern on February 3 in their final home game of the regular season.

Mamaroneck’s offensive onslaught throughout the game has been a theme of theirs the last few weeks, attacking the opposing goaltender from all zones of the ice, and they continued it against Suffern. Suffern’s defense had been one of the toughest defenses Mamaroneck has faced in this winning streak. Mamaroneck was able to get 35 shots on goal before it was all said and done.
All was looking well for Mamaroneck heading into the third and final period. They were ahead 2-1 and with sophomore Tom Spero being as dominating and commanding as he’s been, Mamaroneck needed their defense to step up and have their offense score an insurance goal to keep Suffern at bay. Spero was able to stop 22 shots on goal.

That wasn’t the case.

The third period was an offensive player’s dream as both teams stepped it up and attacked the opposing goaltenders and ended up with a tie score of 3-3 at the end of regulation. Suffern’s Justin Tiso carried his team on his back as he tallied a hat trick, giving him an amazing 22 goals this season, who also has an astounding eight goals in his last three games. Mamaroneck sophomore Conner LeBlanc was able to score a goal and assist on another goal, giving him two points going into overtime.

Unfortunately for Mamaroneck, overtime wasn’t kind to them. After fighting their hardest to score a goal and not end the game in another tie this season, Suffern’s CJ Greco was able to slip the puck past Mamaroneck’s Spero to get the game winner with a little more than three minutes left overtime. Suffern got the win and Mamaroneck’s four game winning streak came to an end.

Mamaroneck is now 13-5-2 and the regular season gets closer to coming to an end. They will meet Suffern one more time in the season finale next week. But before then, they will travel to Rye Town/Harrison this coming Monday night, February 9.
