What do defending state champions dream of? Repeating as state champions, of course. With Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Clarkstown in the Section 1 quarterfinals, the Mamaroneck Varsity Ice team is one step closer to doing just that.
The Tigers got off to a less than desirable start, ceding the game’s first goal with a little over four minutes left in the first period. They managed to turn things around, though, when Harrison Schreiber ’19 cleaned up a rebound to tie the game at a goal apiece in the opening minutes of the second period, and went on to take the lead after junior Michael Carducci’s goal with 1:45 left in the middle period.
Carducci’s goal proved to be the game winner, as Mamaroneck went on to win 4-1. Harrison Fried ’18 and James Torre ’17 netted goals in the third period to put the game out of reach. Tommy Spero picked up his 51st varsity win and remains two shutouts away from breaking the state record for most shutouts.
The Tigers will play North Rockland, whom they defeated, 6-0, on February 10th, at home on Friday, February 24th, at 5pm with a trip to Sunday’s Section 1 final on the line.
