Mamaroneck continued to dominate hockey, like they’ve done all season, and got past Mt. Pleasant 4-2 to win their Section I Division II quaterfinal game and advance to face Pelham in the semi finals.
The Tigers came into the playoffs seeded at number two, Mt. Pleasant at number 7, which also gave Mamaroneck the home ice advantage, which is exactly what they wanted since they have a strong fanbase that comes out and supports the Tigers every home game.
Mt. Pleasant had put on an equally dominant offense to that of Mamaroneck, but it was Mamaroneck’s prowess that got them the edge against Mt. Pleasant in this heated quarter final game.
Mamaroneck found themselves in trouble quite often thanks to penalties and leaving themselves a man short five times in the game. Mt. Pleasant, fortunately for Mamaroneck, were only able to convert one of those penalties for a goal, thanks in part to dominate sophomore goaltender Tom Spero, who recorded 25 saves in the game.
The game was all tied after the first period, 1-1, but the second period was the turning point. Mamaroneck dominated for three more goals then, and that was all they needed. Their defense turned it up and held off Mt. Pleasant, as well as Spero’s fantastic goaltending.
Junior Tiger Will Kirk was able to tally a goal and two key assists in the Tigers win. Junior Will Arbo, who was the team leader in goals this season with 15, added another goal to the game in the key win for Mamaroneck.
Mamaroneck’s usually fierce offensive attack kept Mt. Pleasant scrambling throughout, as the Tigers recorded 32 shots in goal in total.
With the win, Mamaroneck advances to tomorrow night‘s (February 27) semi final, at Hommock’s Ice Rink, and take on the number six seeded Pelham Pelicans, who soundly defeated the number three seeded Yorktown 7-1 last night. The last time they met, back on January 7, Pelham got the big win over Mamaroneck, which many considered the game to be Pelham’s turning point of the season as well as a playoff preview.
Friday night, it’s for real.
