Larchmont’s Voracious Reader Says Goodbye to Bricks and Mortar Store

The Voracious Reader

Francine Lucidon, owner of the Voracious Reader, writes about her decision to close the beloved book store at 1997 Palmer Ave in Larchmont:

“And so the journey began, but not without many tears shed with beloved customers, many roundabout conversations with the dozens of people who’d always dreamt of owning a bookstore (but could never have imagined the immense amount of work coupled with the miniscule amount of profit), and finally, the arduous task of donating bookshelves, selling off tables and sinks, removing refrigerators and packing up (not to mention lugging) an accumulation of twelve years of wonderful memories.

Along the way, options were sorted out, decisions were made and naps were taken. Here’s what we’ve come up with so far:

1.While the bricks and mortar store is closed, aspects of The Voracious Reader will continue, such as our Grandparents’ Club, our Book Baby gift registry and we will likely be involved in some creative pop-up shops come next season.

2.We are available to arrange or support school author visits, and other author appearances, including in home book launch/ book club parties.

3. We hope to build a greater online presence, expanded subscription services and also, more free time to play with our new puppy!

While I will sorely miss the day to day interaction with all the amazing young people of our community (not to mention some pretty wonderful adults!), I will continue to be a strong voice in support of respect for children and their literature. I will finally actually get to embody the values I’ve encouraged in all my customers: slow down, do what you love, appreciate every moment.”

And there’s a Sidewalk Sale!  They’ll be outside Mancino’s, up the street: Thurs. July 18th through Sat. July 20th.

Some suggestions for summer reading for kids:

Kids 1-3: For the littlest bookworm, British artist and textile designer, Jane Foster, creates a beautiful board book celebrating summertime!
Adults:Lots of buzz about this captivating debut from local author Karen Dukess!Perfect beach read! Oprah agrees!

Kids 4-8: The brilliant Dan Santat creates an absolutely hilarious addition to the Elephant & Piggie Like Reading series, for REAL!
Adults: Astonishing speculative fiction from Helen Phillips that will leave you breathless, explores the visceral terror as well as the tenderness of motherhood.

Kids 8-12 From talented local author Emma Otheguy. SLJ says”… will appeal to artists, introverts, or any child who has felt like an outsider..” Lovely, summery middle-grade read!
Adults: Powerful read from local journalist Patrick Raddon Keefe on the Irish troubles. Perfect Father’s Day gift for both history and current events enthusiasts.

My wife, Diane, and I are saddened as well to lose this store. We enjoyed purchasing books for our, then, young nieces and nephews in years past. As well as current grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Our best to Francine and hope to see her around town.
