Larchmont University Club to End after 75 Years

A recent University Club event at Larchmont Yacht Club

The University Club of Larchmont has called it quits after almost  75 years due to a steep decline in membership.

UCL, with member dues and donations, awarded College scholarships to a total of 874 graduating Seniors at Mamaroneck High School from 1929 to 2011,  according to former President Jim Thomson.

“For the last six years, the graduating classes of 2006 to 2011, a total of $205,950 has been awarded,” Thomson tells theLoop.

In a letter to Club members, current President Bradford Booker writes, “The Club, now ending its 75th year, has been an important fixture of the community; however, its time now has passed.  Therefore, after consulting with many former Governors and friends of the Club, the Governors have reluctantly concluded that the Club should cease operations and be dissolved as of December 31, 2011.”

The full text of the letter is here.

While some members are hoping to revive enough interest by the end of the year to prevent it, many officers of the Club remain pessimistic.

Ironic. I have lived in Larchmont 27 years and never heard of the University Club. (Okay I missed Polly’s article last winter.) Guess they didn’t want my money until they needed it.
