Larchmont Bags Plastic Bags

plastic-bag-ban-1

The Village of Larchmont is bagging plastic bags. As of October 1, any retailer supplying those ubiquitous plastic satchels at checkout counters can be fined $150.

Westchester County is leading the State of New York in efforts to reduce the use of the bags, which are clogging landfills and drains.

The new regulation explains that plastic bags take hundreds of years to biodegrade in landfills and when they do start to break down, the bags release potentially harmful chemicals.

The only types of plastic bags exempt from the law are dry cleaner garment bags, plastic produce bags, newspaper home delivery bags, bags larger than 28″ by 36″ and the heavier-gauge plastic bags used by restaurants for takeout food. The law passed on Tuesday gives local merchants six months to use up their plastic bag inventory.

In 2011, the Town of Rye became the first in Westchester to outlaw the bags. Mamaroneck Village followed. A bag bill has been proposed for the Town of Mamaroneck, which has a public hearing on the issue set for 8 p.m. April 3, at the Town Center.

Great! Now there will be more dog sh*t and garbage on the ground. Thank goodness we have elected officials that can take on the tough issues. Btw, what is the deal with newspapers? Are they more green when they’re wet?

Town or Rye or City of Rye? There is a difference.
