Some of you wrote in yesterday asking about the swarm of police activity on the ground and in the air near Rye Playland. It turns out the whole thing was…a hoax.
A home invasion call set off a huge law enforcement response from the City of Rye and several surrounding jurisdictions around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.
105 North Street in Rye was the focus, said Rye Police Commissioner William Connors.
The Rye Brook Police Department received a call from a man there claiming that three men had invaded the home and shot his sister with a shotgun.
The caller added that he was hiding under the bed and that the men had barricaded themselves inside the home. Connors said Rye Police dispatched all available personnel and received assistance from Rye Brook Police, Harrison Police, Port Chester Police, Westchester County Police and MTA Police, as well as several EMS squads and police dogs.
After checking the home, neighbors’ homes and the surrounding area police found no signs of a home invasion. An investigation is underway to apprehend the source of the hoax, which carries felony charges.

An enormous waste of time ? More importantly, what about a waste of tax payer money?
I hate to sound unsympathetic but, do we need police from four towns, the county, the MTA,(I don’t know what is the connection there), EMS and police dogs ? It is scary that they have nothing better to do than get involved in what is clearly a local issue which should have been handled exclusively by local authorities.
Even if it was not a hoax it certainly did not need all those different agencies involved.
People like this man and the one who issued the false May Day about the sinking yacht should get much stiffer sentencing than currently proscribed. The enormous waste of responders’ time and effort can be life threateaning if they’re not available when there really is an emergency.
