Heat Advisory: Take It Easy

It’s a scorcher out there – and expected to get even hotter and more humid before getting better.  In turn, county health officials are urging locals to take it easy.

In issuing an official heat advisory today, the county health department recommends avoiding strenuous activity, caffeine and alcohol while drinking plenty of other fluids. Staying inside with air-conditioning and taking cool showers or baths are good ways to avoid heat stroke, too, the health department said.

New Rochelle’s Hugh Doyle Senior Center, located at 94 Davis Avenue, will be open as a cooling center from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Some of that may sound like common sense (and not a whole lot of fun) but heat stroke is serious and can be life-threatening. Symptoms include hot, dry skin; shallow breathing, a rapid week pulse and confusion. Anyone with those symptoms should get immediate medical help.

Fortunately, though, the heat wave isn’t supposed to last too unbearably long. After soaring possibly to as high as 97 degrees on Thursday, forecasts call for temperatures to drop to 82 degrees on Friday and 72 on Satuday.
