Gun Shows Banned from Westchester County Owned Areas

Latimer speaks at Press Conference Tuesday about new Executive Order on gun shows

In one of his first actions since being sworn in as Westchester County Executive, George Latimer signed an Executive Order prohibiting the sale of guns on Westchester County property, including the Westchester County Center.

In 1999, gun shows were banned at the County Center by former County Executive Andrew J. Spano after the mass shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado. That prohibition was later revoked by Latimer’s predecessor, Rob Astorino, according to Latimer’s office.

“Westchester County government should not be in the business of advancing the sale of weapons and other items often sold at gun shows – plain and simple,” said Latimer. “This is not a restriction on gun shows in the entire county, but rather just on public land.”

Latimer campaigned on instituting a ban when he ran against Astorino last year.

Last January, the county legislature passed a similar bill before the two-day gun show at the County Center Jan. 20-21, but the bill was vetoed by Republican former County Executive Rob Astorino, who said the shows were safe and that sales there followed state ownership laws.
