From the Editor: Call for Transparency for Mamaroneck Parents, Students

Dear Friends:

We are members of this community just like you. Our children participate in local sports, clubs and education.

Like you, we are concerned about some type of incident or incidents that occurred at Hommocks Middle School this past week.

The only factual information that we have to rely on is a Robo call from the school district.

There was an incident at the school Friday that was serious enough to require a lockout.

Beyond that, rumors are taking over and as we gather this weekend over barbecue or in the parks with our pets; unchecked rumors are repeated, amplified and ultimately become fact.

This is not the way to end the school year.

The School District, Superintendent, the Staff and Town of Mamaroneck Police Department have a legal and moral responsibility to tell the truth.

Transparency is the only way that parents can make decisions that affect the safety of our children.

We are trying our hardest to gather the facts and distinguish between fact and rumor but we are being stonewalled by the District and Police.

They will not fully answer our requests for facts and information.

Please call the Mayor’s and Supervisor’s offices, your Council members, the School District and the Police Dept., ask your neighbors to do the same, and ask them to tell us all what happens in our schools.

We call on them to give us the facts so that we can begin the summer break without any lingering questions.

Speaking of transparency, who exactly is the editor of the Loop? I couldn’t find that info on the site. Seems to me the editor is only seeking to rumormonger. Not useful.

I would like to know what occurred on Friday. FIOS 1 reports there was an arrest. Last week it was reported that a male student was posting threatening posts about violence against Homx. The police was notified last week it was reported. Yet, Friday the school was on lock down. We deserve to know what happened? We do not wish to know the student’s name. But we deserve to know about the incident.

I think this article explains many parents thoughts and concerns. I have witness a few incidents involving many Hommocks staff members and yet heard very little of it. We need more transparency because rumors will surface and they might be far from the truth so as a parent I (we) need to know more information

Kudos to the Loop for seeking answers to the questions our children are asking us.

At this point, the school district owes us, as parents and taxpayers, a full explanation of the events of the past week.

One robocall and a vague “All is well” message does nothing to stem the rumors that are racing, unchecked, through our community.

We are NOT asking to name a juvenile, unless that youngster is under arrest and is being charged as an adult.

We’re not asking for anything special here. As with any crime, a juvenile who is arrested and facing accountability for a serious infraction of the law gets charged as an adult.

We fully support due process but with that freedom comes the responsibility of informing the public if someone has been arrested and what charges they face.

If there is no arrest, the students, staff, parents and community is entitled to hear a factual accounting of what caused school officials to either a lockout or lockdown in our school this week.

We can not go into the last days of the school year and the upcoming summer break without knowing what events transpired this week that resulted in a weekend of unsubstantiated hearsay.

I ask you all to join in asking our educators and our police for what Sgt. Joe Friday called “Just the facts.”

I appreciate the right of the press to investigate and report the news and for the community to have proper information from our municipalities and schools. I also appreciate the right to privacy of minor children in our legal and educational systems. What you are labeling as “stonewalling” may in fact be the legal protection of children in our community. I do think communication needs to be thoroughly examined and vastly improved. I believe that gossiping, innuendo and misrepresenting such as fact on social media is irresponsible and dangerous.

Thank you for posting this Larchmont Loop editor!

I posted a similar thought in a Mamaroneck Moms and Dads group about the importance of transparency in our district:
“I had written then deleted a post last night about the incident at HMX. I did this because there was AND IS a great amount of disinformation and speculation being back channeled in the vacuum of information, and concerned parents wrote to me to ask for information.

I want to remind people that two things can be true:
1. the name of parties involved must be kept confidential
but also
2. parents can be informed by the district with an appropriate amount of information so proper conversations with students can occur and families in the district can feel safe.

We seem to keep getting this wrong. Our school district keeps trying to sweep incidents under the rug.

I would suggest showing up at school board meetings and agitating on this front for not only proper communications, but also protocols so things improve.

My heart goes out to all the families impacted yesterday. We are living in a challenging and frightening time. Information will help us better come together as a community. Peace out.
