Beginning this September, ArtsWestchester kicks off a series featuring Westchester’s talented visual, performing and literary artists and the jewels of the county’s arts organizations, all taking place at The Arts Exchange, ArtsWestchester’s historic 1929 venue in downtown White Plains – a place where ideas, discussion and the arts go hand-in-hand. ArtsWestchester connects people to the arts in this and other magnificent spaces, creating a place where the arts are available, affordable and accessible, offering diverse programs to challenge a wide range of artistic tastes – a place where the program is up close and the intimate setting is a work of art in itself.
The thirteen events taking place between September 24th and January 29th highlight a variety of artistic experiences, including performances by local musicians in our popular NewUrbanJazz series; theater programs such as the Red Monkey Theater’s presentation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night on the evening of January 14th; and the highly-anticipated opening of sculptor Vinnie Bagwell’s Enslaved Africans’ Rain Garden exhibition on Friday, September 24th.

An urban heritage sculpture garden to honor the legacy of the first enslaved Africans to be manumitted (freed) by law in the United States of America, 76 years before the Emancipation Proclamation. New works by Vinnie Bagwell will be on display, as well as background information on slavery in Westchester. Sponsored by Con Edison.

Kinetic Sculpture: Artist Curt Coble and the P.A.M. Band
Part of Free Arts Week at ArtsWestchester
Advancing the arts into new landscapes of entertainment through the innovative use of robotic technology, the P.A.M. (Partially Artificial Musicians) Band is accompanied by live musicians, dancers and storytellers. Event includes workshops, performances and demonstrations from 1-5pm, and a 6pm screening of director Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent film classic, Metropolis, accompanied by the sounds of the P.A.M. Band.

World Fusion: Music of the Middle East
Yonkers-based vocalist Gaida Hinnawi will wow you with her original and highly personal style marked by great emotional intensity. The “Syrian Nightingale” evokes the emotional storminess of legendary singers like Warda and Om Kalthoum, but her remarkable abilities to improvise and expand on traditional Arabic maqams suggest all-new exotic possibilities.

Red Monkey Theater Presents: Twelfth Night
Welcome the New Year with an abridged production of Twelfth Night, directed by Tal Aviezer. Shakespeare’s last comedy, while frequently hilarious, also carries with it the desperate lingering and bittersweet sense of a grand celebration winding down. It is a fitting farewell to the holiday season, as a cast of unforgettable characters indulge in a final big blowout before examining themselves in the cool gray light of day. The illuminating sunlight in this case is provided by Viola (Keri Seymour), one of the Bard’s most beloved comic heroines. Featuring original live music composed and performed by Lauren Anker.
