Local Earth Day Celebrations

Celebrate Earth Day ahead of time with some local activities…

Join a “Clean-up” of the 60-acre Larchmont Reservoir hosted by Sheldrake Environmental Center. (The actual Earth Day is Monday April 22.)

Saturday April 20 — 10 AM to 12 PM. Gloves and bags provided! EarthDayCleanup

There will be naturalist-led activities for the kids and a workshop from 9 to 10 AM on composting where you can learn how to reduce waste while creating beneficial compost for your garden.

If you’re ready, you can buy an Earth Machine compost bin on the spot. (Bin and workshop cost $85. Workshop alone is $25 for non-students; students $5.)

In between your clean-up and composting, you might want to do a little green shopping. For members of Sheldrake, there’s a discount available at local  nurseries— Tony’s Nursery, Larchmont Nursery, Redwood Nursery, and Simply the Best (Scarsdale). Official Earth Day items are available online at Earth Day Network, where you you can support the cause.

On Sunday April 21st, you also can join a family scavenger hunt at 2 PM at the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye where the staff will guide you through clues of the natural and unnatural elements of Marshlands.

Or you can head over to  the Earth Day celebration at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla where Westchester County Executive Robert P. Astorino will present the 2013 Earth Day awards for recycling.
