County Eco Award Goes to Greenburgh Nature Center

Westchester County will give an Eco Award for the largest voluntary residential food scrap recycling program in Westchester launched by the Greenburgh Nature Center in partnership with the Town of Greenburgh.

The Greenburgh Nature Center introduced a pilot food scrap recycling program in the summer of 2015 focusing on the benefits of composting using on-site zero-waste sorting stations.

Greenburgh’s food scrap recycling program now gives residents the opportunity to collect food scraps in countertop pails and divert these scraps from the waste stream.
The Nature Center teaches local public schools on how to implement comprehensive recycling and composting as part of their daily operations.

Margaret Tjimos-Goldberg, Executive Director of the Greenburgh Nature Center, hopes other communities will adopt a similar program. She notes: “As a local leader in sustainability education, we encourage all communities to consider the benefits of this program and its positive impact on our environment.”

The award will be presented to the Greenburgh Nature Center by County Executive George Latimer at Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla on Tuesday, June 19th at 3:00pm.

The Town of Mamaroneck and the Village of Larchmont also received an eco award from the County for their outstanding contribution to the County’s environment by launching a voluntary food waste recycling program in the Fall of 2017. A program which gives residents the opportunity to collect food scraps in their home and bring it to the Maxwell Ave. collection site, from which it is transported to a composting facility.
