Cool Finds: City Island Nautical Museum

When was the last time you went to City Island? This gem is so great and so easy to get to.

And the City Island Nautical Museum wants you to know it is one of 40 historic sites in New York City, chosen from over 500 applicants, selected to compete for $3 million in grants to preserve the city’s historic buildings, icons and landmarks. The building, an old school, was constructed in 1897–98, was recently designated a New York City landmark and is on the National Register for Historic Places.

The funding is provided by American Express, working with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in a grass-roots preservation effort called Partners in Preservation.

In order to obtain a grant, the Nautical Museum must get as many people as possible to support the Museum by voting every day until May 21 on the Partners in Preservation website. The four projects with the most votes will receive their grants.

The City Island Nautical Museum contains five rooms full of seafaring memorabilia with a focus on the America’s Cup—the “Olympics of Yachting”—as well as the boat-building and sail-making industries on this small Island in Long Island Sound off the coast of the Bronx. The Museum is also a repository of ship models, artifacts, photographs, paintings, and documents by and about Island residents past and present. The Museum is open on every Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

The Nautical Museum was one of four sites in the competition selected for a special segment in the Emmy-award winning television program “Secrets of New York.” The segment premiers on May 1 and will be aired multiple times on channel 22 (Cablevision) or 25 (Time Warner) and can be streamed through the nyc.gov/media website (or you can just Google “Secrets of New York”
