Coming up at the JCC, author Leah Vincent in conversation with Footsteps’ Executive Director Lani Santo. Thursday Nov. 20, 11am- 12:20 pm.

The daughter of an ultra-Orthodox rabbi, Leah Vincent was raised in a very strict household. When she began exchanging letters with a male friend at the age of 16, against her parents’ rules, she was cut loose from her family. A 16-year-old Vincent was given a plane ticket to NYC and left to fend for herself.

Vincent’s memoir, “Cut Me Loose: Sin and Salvation After My Ultra-Orthodox Girlhood,”recalls her struggle to define herself as an individual after her harrowing ordeal.

Leah Vincent now works with Footsteps, an organization that supports formerly Orthodox individuals. Footsteps provides a range of services, including social and emotional support, educational and vocational guidance, workshops and social activities, and access to resources for individuals who want to explore beyond their insular communities.

On Nov. 20, Leah Vincent will speak of her experience and partake in a discussion with Footsteps’ Executive Director Lani Santo.

A Q&A session will follow the discussion.

Good for Leah, now she has 100 times the likelihood of kids who will have multiple extra-marital affairs and abortions! Yipee! Not to say everything is rosy in the Ultra-Orthodox community, but to the fair-minded out there, the pluses outweigh the minuses. Leah, theres a happy medium, its called Modern Orthodox. Leah made some money and smeared her parents and ancestors along the way! Good for her! What courage!
