Child Struck by Tree Trick or Treating in New Rochelle

Parts of the tree that struck child on Maywood Road Halloween night

A girl was trick-or-treating on Maywood Road near Mountain Avenue in the Larchmont Woods area of New Rochelle Thursday night when she was hit by the branch of a tree. Strong wind and gale warnings were in effect at the time.

New Rochelle police said the 9-year-old girl, who sources say lives on Normandy Lane, was trick or treating when she was struck by a tree at 6:28 p.m. She was trapped  until a nearby resident heard the tree fall and pulled her out from beneath it, police said.

The tenant of the home where the tree was located told PIX11 she was about to greet the girl, who was dressed as witch, when the tree fell. She said she has previously asked the landlord and the town to remove the tree, and that it was on Con Edison’s “to-do list” this summer, but it was never done.

Capt. Cosmo Costa of the New Rochelle Police Dept. says the girl was taken to Westchester Medical Center with fractures in her legs and pelvis.
