Candidates to Debate Wednesday

With elections nearing, the League of Women Voters is hosting a candidates debate at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday at the courthouse located at the Mamaroneck Town Center, 740 W. Boston Post Road.  Here’s the information the organization sent us about the debate as well as the procedure for voting by absentee ballot if you won’t be in town for the election Nov. 8:

The following contested races and candidates are slated to debate:

·        Westchester County Legislator: Incumbent Judy Myers (Democratic, Independent, Working Families) and Suzanna Keith (Republican, Conservative)

·        Mamaroneck Village Mayor: Incumbent Norman S. Rosenblum (Republican, Conservative, Independence) and Toni Pergola Ryan (Democratic)

·        Mamaroneck Village Trustee: Incumbent Louis N. Santoro (Republican, Independence, Conservative) and Scott Dufault (Democratic)

·        Mamaroneck Town Council (2 seats open): Incumbent Phyllis Wittner (Democratic); Abby Katz (Democratic) and Seth Marcus (Republican)

One candidate in an uncontested race is invited to make a brief informative presentation: Mamaroneck Town Supervisor Nancy Seligson (Democratic)

Also running uncontested on this year’s ballot is Mamaroneck Town Justice Jean Marie Brescia (Democratic) and Mamaroneck Town Clerk Delores A. Battalia (Democratic).

Questions for the local debate will be accepted from the audience in written form 15 minutes prior to the start of the debate. Candidates will be invited to make opening statements and will be asked a couple of questions from the LWV in addition to questions from the audience. The LWV moderator (brought in from outside the Larchmont-Mamaroneck district) will ask the submitted questions, time permitting. Candidates will also have an opportunity to make closing statements. The order of the candidate statements are chosen in advance by lots.

The League requires members of the public submitting debate questions to be present in the audience if and when their question is asked.  “Since there are strict time constraints, we cannot accommodate every audience member’s question,” explained LWV President Elisabeth Radow. “We try to include questions covering as many different topics as possible,” she added.

The League welcomes all citizens to come and hear their candidates, to learn about their positions, and to make an informed choice on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8th.  To obtain additional voter information, such as the address of your polling place and a ballot preview detailing what you will see on the ballot (including candidates in races not participating in the debate and ballot propositions) go to www.vote411.org . Enter just your street address and zip code to access customized election information.

If you are unable to go to the polls on election day, you can vote by absentee ballot. Here’s how:

1.Call the Westchester County Board of Elections at 995-5700 and request an application for the Absentee Ballot, or download the Application Form from their website: www.westchestergov.com/boe

2. Return the Application by mail by November 1st or in person by November 7th to receive your official ballot.

3. After filling it out, return it to the Bd. of Elections office in person by November 8th or postmarked no later than midnight of November 7th (needs to be received by the BOE no later than Nov. 15th).
