Caffeine Buzz

The Local Coffee Buzz: it’s all about the coffee. it’s all about the coffee. it’s all about the coffee. Am I awake yet?

Aroma  Good local alternative to the ubiquitous chain across the street. Sit outside and watch the show. 1932 Palmer Avenue, Larchmont. 914.832.4494.

Bradley’s  In a few short years, Bradley’s has become a local institution. Good coffee and fruit pastries, probably best quality baked goods in area. Go for light breakfast or lunch. Tiny seating area but outdoor tables in nice weather. 2 Chatsworth Avenue, Larchmont. 914.833.1095.

Cafe Mozart   A good local coffeehouse, though hardly the institution of its sister location on the Upper West Side. Friendly, relaxed, with outdoor seating. Occasional live music, or just bring your own. 308 Mamaroneck Ave, Mamaroneck. 914.698.4166.

Chocolations  Sitting at the Mamaroneck train station, waiting for my train in the hot sun while finishing up my nice, tall, frosty iced coffee from , I discover that the ice cubes left at the bottom are made out of coffee–how cool is that? —Leslie Brill

Cosi  The original Cosi restaurant is in Paris. And you can get s’mores for dessert. But it still feels like a chain restaurant, and service can be slow. Not good when you haven’t had your….coffee. Coffee, sandwiches and salads.  1298 Boston Post Road, Larchmont. 914.834.9797.

East Avenue Cafe  Good coffee, good food and friendly service at the counter. Just be prepared for the owner’s sense of humor (“Is that your grandchild?” he asked a young woman about her baby) A wall of candy by the pound. 2 East Avenue, Larchmont.

Starbucks  With 7500 locations around the world, why should we be any different? We guess they’re everywhere for a reason. Rumors they make the coffee addictive remain unproven. Recent story on ABC’s 20/20 (produced by your Editrix) indicates that if you ask for decaf, you do not always get it. 1929 Palmer Avenue, Larchmont. 914.834.6863.

Now that Mug ‘n Plus (which roasted their own beans) and Chocolations are closed [sniff], it’s a bit of a hike to find coffee near the Mamaroneck train station when you’re coming from a certain direction. (I’m still waiting for a Starbucks to open in the old station house–what happened to that plan?) I’d recommend the new Super Pan Bakery (362 Mamaroneck Ave.)–very good coffee ($1), and delicious, fresh-baked blueberry muffins, when they have them (a bargain at 60 cents!). O’Neill’s Country Store also has decent cofffee.

Thumbs up so far for Mug ‘N Plus, at 443 Mamaroneck Avenue, a block from the Mamaroneck train station (next to Chocolations). They roast their own coffee, and it is very good. Haven’t eaten anything there yet–the stuff in the display case looks pretty pedestrian, but they have some decent-sounding sandwiches on the menu, and fresh-fruit smoothies. But most important, the people who run it are exceptionally friendly, and there’s a family-friendly and homey vibe in there. Also, nice selection of magazines, good music, and big TV with CNN.

Did ya know?
An American tea and coffee merchant named Thomas Sullivan invented the tea bag in 1904. He used the tea bag to send samples to his customers.
