Down in “the Flats,” the ever-evolving, gritty industrial area of Mamaroneck best known for car repair shops, the cable company dishes, small businesses and warehouses, there’s a hidden beauty.
June Marie Sobrito’s photograph of the Gutta Percha Rubber Factory captures that.
Built in 1888 at 413 Fayette Avenue, this factory churned out gutta-percha, a type of rubber, until 1919. Gutta-Percha is used in dentistry, among other things. Not much information remains about the origin of the building itself, which is now occupied by Blondie’s Treehouse.
Very interesting.
