Book Club: The Art of Fielding

Mamaroneck reader Julie Salicrup’s column of book reviews and recommendations for book clubs.

This week’s book is The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach

I kept hearing some really good things about this book and saw a ton of people lugging this 500 page hardcover book on and off the train.  I read it last week on the beach in St. Thomas…so for many reasons, I wasn’t disappointed.

Set in a small college in Wisconsin….  It follows the life of Henry Skrimshander and how one errant throw changes everything.  Henry is a star short stop that gets a severe case of the “Chuck Knoblauch’s”.

Ripe with baseball terms and metaphors, this novel takes you from the team bus to the field and into the lives of the players.  Non sport junkies may not appreciate the baseball references but don’t be turned off by that…..the characters are just as riveting as a playoff game between the Yankees and Red Sox.

Readers will see similarities between the situations the characters are placed in and real life.  The students struggle with success and failure, friends and family and the beginning of genuine emotions… and desire.  Abundant with literary references…the author studied English at Harvard..if books and baseball are your thing than this is the book for you.

You will be Henry’s biggest fan.
