Another Burglary in Larchmont and Residents Click “Send”

Larchmont Police Dept.

This email is circulating between residents in Larchmont:

Our neighbor’s house was broken into last night (Thursday) while she was in the house. Like the burglaries in the last few months, the burglar got into her car, opened the garage and broke into the house at around 3 AM. He took laptops, wallets, etc. He didn’t go upstairs. And according to the police, the burglar also likes good leather–he takes the good handbags but leaves the non-designer ones behind.

Unfortunately the Village of Larchmont Police Department has a policy of not releasing public information until it decides when to do so. Reporters are referred to the online police blotter. The current police blotter (as of 1/27) only reports crimes from 1/16-1/20.

A First Amendment lawyer we spoke with today says he believes this policy violates Freedom of Information laws in New York.

An automated phone call the week of Jan. 9 warned residents about a rash burglaries since Thanksgiving.

A recent robbery in the Town of Mamaroneck section of Larchmont also inspired email warnings among residents. There has been no significant break in that case, according to Town Police.

We will continue to press VOLPD more information. Feel free to email me at editor@theloopny.com with information or questions.

Wanted to update…

I did receive e-mail back from neighborhood association and they are planning to be at the Town Board Meeting tomorrow (2/1) to bring up for discussion. The Town Meeting begins at 8 pm and comments from the floor can be taken anytime between 9 -11 pm.

Good for the Loop for reporting this – extremely important for us to know not only about the recent mini crime spree but also the respective police departments’ lack of transparency and stonewalling in response to citizens’/taxpayers’ concerns.

It bothers me the most that the police department is not being proactive about letting residents know. It is all word of mouth (which I know the police dept doesn’t like). I know that the Larchmont Police Department made the decision for a robocall regarding break ins – the Mamaroneck Police Dept didn’t feel it was serious enough to inform us. I called them about it and they do not seem to be concerned. I have also heard that there have been a number of day time break ins in the “turtle park” area? One quickly hit house after the next.

I have also heard (again – this is all from other people) that the robber in the armed robbery last week held the gun to the guys head and said over and over “i’m going to kill you”. Police have said they believe that the robber came from New Rochelle and they are working with the police department there”, but I heard they actually traced the cell phone to the Bronx?

The police dept needs to be keeping us in the loop on all of this and reassure us that measures are being taken to protect us. I also think that they should ban the door to door solicitors. We are living in a different world now and it isn’t safe. Neighborhoods are pretty quiet during the day and solicitors can check out houses and find out who is home and who isn’t. I believe that Rye has banned solicitors.

I called the Town of Mamaroneck to ask if these issues would be included in the next agenda. They told me NO. They told me that there is no need for concern and that the town is extremely safe. I say that some of us residents should demand some action. I have contacted my neighborhood association, but haven’t gotten a response back yet (only sent the e-mail today). Like I said before, all of what I have heard is from other people, but if all this talk is so off, then the Town should be speaking up and telling us what is really going on. Maybe I am overreacting, but I would imagine that a high numbers of residents feel the same way I do.

Now what is the advantage of a local PD?
Robo-calls?
