Aw…This Old Thing? New Rochelle heritageAwards

Possibly… if you live in New Rochelle. Nominations are now being accepted for the City’s annual Heritage Awards.

Acoording to City Historian Barbara Davis, “New Rochelle has an amazing and long history. A good number of our community’s structures and landscapes embody and relate this heritage –  through exemplary and well-preserved architecture or the property’s relationships to significant people and events in New Rochelle’s history.”   (Have you seen LoopTV’s take on this?  We think they should nominate Dick van Dyke’s house.)

Davis should know. She’s a judge.

“These places constitute the soul of our community. Whether an early 18th century house, a  fire station or school, a cemetery or waterfront clubhouse, these are places that resound in past decades that are still so important to today and the future. Without them, we are not New Rochelle: an early and unique settlement in colonial times; and one of America’s first and most popular suburbs.”

The Heritage Award program allows a handful of these wonderful places to receive City recognition and, Davis says, ” a great sign that will pique interest and foster well-earned respect.”

Entries accepted through January 8. More information.
