Amtrak: Washington to Boston in 3 Hours?

In the "are they serious??" department comes this from Loop reader Bill. A proposal to redesign the fading infrastructure of the Northeast Corridor

rail system includes this small detail. ..by-passing Westchester all together and routing traffic from a tunnel in Ronkonkoma, Long Island to New Haven.

The cost would be about $100 billion between Washington and Boston.

Yes, Amtrak still has no Internet and it’s expensive. I would prefer leaving on a train from New Rochelle, but it’s hard to beat the Bolt Bus prices, movies and wi-fi.

I agree that US passenger rail services even in the Northeast Corridor cannot compare with the great infrastructure and services available in places like France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, etc. But the corridor is greatly improved in the last ten years, in my view, and I am much happier taking especially the “Acela Express” trains between Stamford and Boston or Stamford and Philadelphia/Baltimore than the air alternatives.
One big defect for sure on most Amtrak trains, though: no internet. It seems like it should be such an easy fix….

If they could offer NYC-DC in under 2 hours, I would happily go down to Penn Station. What we have now is an embarassment, given rail travel in Europe and Japan.
