Mamaroneck Schools Superintendent Dr. Robert I. Shaps says 46 of 339 water sources in the District’s six school buildings exceed allowable levels of lead.

The tests were conducted in July by QuES&T: Quality Environmental Solutions and Technology, an outside environmental testing company.

“Coinciding with yesterday’s announcement by Governor Andrew Cuomo mandating lead testing among all New York public school districts by Oct. 1, we received the results of our July testing, flagging 46 of our 339 water sources (sinks and/or drinking fountains) with levels exceeding the allowable levels,” Shaps wrote in a letter to parents.

“Today, we went through each of our six school buildings and identified the location of every sample from bathroom fixtures, drinking areas, etc. with elevated levels.  Over the course of the afternoon and evening hours, we are taking steps to disable all drinking water sources in question.  We have scheduled comprehensive follow-up testing to verify results and determine the source of the problem — with the goal of determining permanent corrective action. ”

Shaps said bottled water coolers will be made available, and signs posted near water sources that are out of service.
