100’s of Local Students Walk-out, Colleges Say Won’t Impact Admissions

New Rochelle High School walkout March 14

High Schools across the area and the nation honored victims of the Parkland, Florida shootings at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School today in a 17 minute walkout. This represented one minute per person killed in the shooting.

At New Rochelle High School, students assembled in front of the main building, surrounded by faculty and supervisors. This despite warnings from school administrators that students would be given unexcused absences for participating.

At Mamaroneck High School, several hundred participated. Music played and the names of the 17 victims were read.

Police cars were stationed at each of the main entrances around the school perimeter at both schools.

Hundreds of colleges have posted statements about the walk-outs and protests indicating that they will not impact admissions decisions, even if students are penalized by their high schools. A sampling of these online includes: Vassar, MIT, and Tulane.
